Glasgow and Cultural Memory at 850

Dr Craig Lamont

Thursday 9 January | 6.00pm | Eyre Hall, Clyde St, Glasgow (Map)

This talk will focus on Glasgow and the concept of cultural memory on the occasion of the 850th anniversary of the city. Dr Lamont will consider the strongest Glaswegian ‘images’ and weigh them up against other historic moments of the city which have been neglected or ‘forgotten’. From the Cathedral to the Clyde, Glasgow’s cityscape has gone through tremendous change, but how much of that change can we see? How much can be recovered?

Dr Craig Lamont is Lecturer in Scottish Studies at the University of Glasgow. Working across Scottish literature and history, Craig has published widely on memory studies, bibliography, and print culture. Craig has also edited new scholarly editions of Robert Burns, Allan Ramsay, and John Galt. His monograph The Cultural Memory of Georgian Glasgow was published by Edinburgh University Press in 2021.
