Glasgow Cathedral: Dingin’ Doon the Towers

dominic d’angelo

Free | Saturday 31 January | 1.00pm | Mitchell Library Moir-Dyer Room, Glasgow (Map)

Throughout the first half of the 19th century plans to restore and reconfigure Glasgow Cathedral were in play, including to add new stonework to harmonise more closely with Georgian and Victorian ideas of what a Gothic cathedral should look like, culminating in the 1840s decision to remove the two western towers.

Dominic d’Angelo, a career diplomat who served in some of the most challenging areas of the Arab world, now Chair of The Alexander Thomson Society, looks at the events leading up to the removal of the towers and why the City Council, despite strong objections, was so keen.
